At PFC we are trying to find our way along the Jesus path for our time and place.
January 4 | The Annual Examen | A Year in Review
Philippians: To Live is Christ
The book of Philippians opens from an unexpected place: a prison cell. Paul is writing not as a man whose circumstances are ideal, but as one whose joy is anchored deeper than comfort, success, or freedom. From the very first lines, the letter confronts a quiet assumption many of us carry—that joy comes after things work out. Paul gently but firmly flips that script. Joy, he shows us, is not the reward at the end of the journey; it’s a resource God gives us for the journey.
Paul's letter invites us to examine where our joy actually lives. Is it tied to outcomes, relationships, health, or control? Or is it rooted in Christ, who remains steady even when everything else shifts? Paul’s joy is not naïve optimism; it’s resilient confidence. It’s the settled assurance that God is at work, even in confinement, even in delay, even in suffering.
